With more than 55 years of experience, Horton is well regarded for its commitment to innovation, reliability and the environment.

polarforceHorton introduces WindShift™ Modular Fans
WindShift fans provide flexibility and expedite testing and prototyping

Horton has introduced its first modular fans—WindShift Modular Fans for the off-highway, industrial and other specialty markets. This line of fans provides significant versatility in design and manufacturing for innumerable applications and optimal fan drive cooling. WindShift Modular Fans have innovative clamshell knuckles that clamp the blades at precise pitch angles. This feature offers flexibility for customers’ specifications and speeds the testing and prototyping stages.

"The blade design is computer-optimized to provide efficient cooling," says Neal Shawaluk, director of sales for off-highway, industrial and specialty markets at Horton. "If testing shows that a different pitch angle or blade configuration provides more optimal cooling for a specific application, the knuckle clamp feature allows us to easily modify the fan design. This flexibility ensures that significantly less time is spent on testing, prototyping—and manufacturing, without sacrificing performance."

advantageHorton introduces Shogun™ Modular Fans
Myriad configurations for maximum cooling

Horton has introduced its first modular fans, including Shogun Modular Fans. Shogun is available in a variety of blade counts and configurations for first-fit applications and is compatible with Horton and competitive viscous fan drives.

"Modular designs reduce the amount of tooling required and also require less manufacturing time," says Neal Shawaluk, director of sales for off-highway, industrial and specialty markets at Horton. "That means the new products get to market much faster, and our customers benefit from innovation without waiting."

Blade segments on the new fans are riveted to a center disk for efficient customization. The fans are available in diameters ranging from 16 inches (406.4 millimeters) to 22 inches (559 millimeters) and in configurations of six to 10 equally spaced blades. Staggered blade configurations are available upon request, and fans are offered in clockwise and counterclockwise rotations. Shogun Modular Fans feature standard pilot sizes ranging from 1 inch (25 millimeters) to 5 inches (127 millimeters) and a pitch width of 2.44 inches (62 millimeters). Maximum tip speed is 18,000 feet per minute (91 meters per second).

advantageHorton introduces Arctis™ Two-Speed Fan Drives
Highest torque available, exceptional efficiency, noise reduction

Horton, Inc. has introduced Arctis Two-Speed Fan Drives, for better, more efficient engine cooling in medium-duty trucks, buses, severe-service vehicles, rear-engine cement mixers and other on- and off-highway equipment with little to no ram air. The Arctis line provides the highest torque available from Horton, 2,700 inch-pounds (305 N-m), in its patented two-speed technology.

In most conditions, the two-speed fan drive is powered by eddy current, turning the fan at a lower speed, reducing operating noise and increasing available horsepower for auxiliary systems. When the vehicle needs more cooling, the fan drive spring actuates to run the fan at full input speed. Because the eddy current mode provides sufficient cooling in most operating conditions, full-speed fan operation is reduced by 85 percent. This improves fuel economy, reduces operating noise and increases available horsepower. Fewer fan engagement cycles also improve fan drive, belt and tensioner reliability while minimizing radiator abrasion from dust and debris.

advantageHorton announces expansion of Britton, S.D., manufacturing facility
Plant will manufacture and test medium-duty truck and off-highway viscous fan drive products

Horton, Inc. announces the second-phase expansion of its viscous manufacturing facility in Britton, S.D. The plant will produce and test the company’s VMaster® Viscous Directly Controlled Fan Drive product line for medium-duty truck and off-highway market segments. Completion of the addition is scheduled for December 2009, with production to begin in the first quarter of 2010.

The 7,500-square foot expansion is being added to the main plant and will more than triple the original viscous manufacturing area that was added on in 2007. The Britton plant manufactures the Stratis® Viscous Fan Drives for heavy-duty trucks, several lines of fan drives, remanufactured fan drives and repair kits, including the DM Advantage™ On/Off and Two-Speed Fan Drives.

DiHorton and Hub City introduce mechanically driven variable-speed fan drive system with gearbox
Better cooling for rear-engine buses, motor homes and motor coaches with side-mounted cooling modules

Horton, Inc., in conjunction with Hub City, Inc., has introduced a mechanically driven variable-speed fan drive system with gearbox for more efficient cooling of rear-engine buses, motor homes and motor coaches with side-mounted cooling modules. The system includes the Horton VMaster® or Stratis® Viscous Fan Drive, WindMaster® or WindShift™ Fan, Di Controller and Hub City Right-Angle Gearbox.

The Horton and Hub City system can be easily retrofitted to replace hydraulic and other mechanical systems. This variable-speed fan drive system offers advantages over hydraulic systems that include increased safety (no risk of hydraulic-fluid leaks), increased overall system efficiency, lower operating costs and reduced system complexity.

Advantages of this variable-speed system over competitive mechanical systems include increased efficiency, lower operating costs and a fail-safe design.

Horton’s 2010 sales representatives meeting and presentations of the 2009 sales awards

Horton’s 2010 sales representatives meeting was held the week of January 11, 2010 in Plymouth, Mich. The theme for the meeting was "Tomorrow’s Technology Today."

"According to the feedback I’ve received, the meeting was a success and will provide the springboard for an outstanding sales year in 2010," explains Tom Hujik, director of aftermarket/field sales for Horton’s North American customers. "The highlight of Tuesday’s reception and dinner was the presentations of the 2009 sales awards."

pusateriKen Brandt is the 2009 recipient of the regional sales manager of the year. The award distinguishes Brandt’s outstanding efforts with his sales group and the opportunities he recognized and obtained for Horton. Brandt secured Horton’s first specification for DM Advantage™ Fan Drives as an option with Volvo Trucks. One of his national fleet accounts, Penske Corporation, has ordered 100 vehicles—and plans to order more—that specify DM Advantage Fan Drives. He also successfully initiated a retrofit program for Greyhound Bus Lines.

pusateriThe dinner included the inaugural launch of the Ross Pusateri, Sr. Sales Achievement Award, which is presented to our top independent sales agency for the highest percentage of sales growth. During a recession, it was exceptional to see 10.4 percent growth over 2008 sales. This award was presented to J.D. Coyle Sales, Inc. of Bedford, Nova Scotia. Accepting the award were John Coyle and Stephen Stockdale.

Linda Pusateri, President of Pusateri Sales, also attended the dinner. Linda will receive a duplicate of the plaque that will be on permanent display in Horton’s Roseville, Minn. headquarters.

"Please join me in congratulating the winners of these prestigious awards," says Hujik. "And I’d like to thank everyone who helped make this meeting a great success."
